Skateboard Park Construction Process

Note: Skateboard Parks should, under no circumstance, be constructed by contractors inexperienced in the art of professional skatepark construction.

Steps to the Construction Process

2. Excavation, Grading and Compaction The efficiency of the design/build process shines through during this stage. A properly placed skatepark based on the land topography is key to designing an efficient to build skatepark.

3. Drainage A proper drainage plan is key to storm water evacuation. Bowls in particular must daylight or tie into existing city drainage. Most parks will have "1-3 skatepark drains" and 1-3 "landscape drains" properly installed prior to skatepark placement. Street course drainage can be natural slopes with a drain only where necessary. Clean outs for future maintenance are recomended.

4. Skatepark Forms At this stage of construction, skills in wooden skatepark construction are essential. The shape and quality of the skatable elements of a concrete skatepark are only as good as the forms they are poured in.

5. Metal Fabrication Metal fabrication for a skateboard park is a very skilled and detailed task. Placement is key and only skateboard specific skills can properly install coping, grind edges, support structures and specialty re-bar work.

6. Rebar Installation

Steel fabrication and installation is key to the strength of any skatepark. Making sure the skatepark is firmly footed into the ground with strengthened concrete is important to prevent shifting. Tying the features together properly with steel bar will also prevent cracks and separations.

7. Cast In Place Concrete

Cast in place concrete is the pouring of footers, columns, ledges, planters, walls etc. This phase is very important because it often times is the structural suppot of the skatepark. In the case of skateable ledges this stage of construction needs special care to ensure that ledges are safe and enjoyable for skaters.  

8. Shotcrete Placement

A special application process shotcrete is used to pour most transitional and bank elements. This unique process applies dry concrete to make vertical walls and steep banks.

10. Landscaping, Signage and Park Facilities
Once the skatepark itself is finished additional aspects of the park such as landscaping, fencing and signage are recommended to be installed. Other park facilities like benches, awnings, pavillions, trash cans, bathrooms, drinking fountains etc are also reccomended to be installed by the municipality. Skateparks should have facilities for skaters and spectators alike.

11. Skatepark Grand Opening
Once the skateboard park is complete, we encourage and work with city leaders to organize a grande opening. A skatepark's grand opening is always highly attended and allows city officials, advocacy and community leaders to be recognized for their contributions. These events also promote a community's position on healthy living and an embracement of skateboarders. We have been in the skateboard event promotions industry since 2002.
