Colony Texas Skate Park

The City of The Colony’s Wheel Zone – Skate & Bike Park official grand opening event was held on Saturday, December 16, 2017.

DESCRIPTION

The City of The Colony’s only skate park has been completely renovated and expanded! Originally built in 2003, the skatepark consisted of prefabricated metal ramps on a concrete slab – all enclosed by a chain link fence. As part of a design-build skatepark project with the City, the fence came down, the skatepark doubled in size and all existing ramps were replaced with custom designed concrete terrain. This “slab retrofit” skatepark project is a much-needed improvement for skaters and the City alike. User groups much prefer the experience of a custom designed concrete skatepark when compared to metal, prefabricated ramps. Cities have recognized the value that poured in place concrete skateparks bring to a community.

SKATEPARK TERRAIN

The newly expanded and renovated skatepark was designed in collaboration New Line Skateparks, with input from the local skaters, bikers, and scooter riders. There was a big request for lower level, more technical plaza terrain, which were generally incorporated onto the existing post tensioned slab. Manual pads, ledges and rails make for a real street feel. The brand new terrain roughly doubles the existing skate park size and includes some quarter pipes for transitional terrain. Elevation changes allowed for a big bank / London Gap / stair set. You’ll recognize The Colony’s Skate Park by the inclusion of the City’s ‘ship logo’ into the main manual pad – custom fabricated on site by the SPA Skateparks team.

SKATEPARK PROJECT HISTORY

Funds for “The Colony Wheel Zone – Skate & Bike Park” came from the City’s Community Development Corporation (CDC). The metal, prefabricated skate ramps were in a state of disrepair. At the same time, the skaters and bikers of The Colony advocated for a modern day site-integrated concrete skatepark. A big thanks to the City of The Colony for their dedication to this project. The result is a successful public skatepark that local youth helped design themselves.
